PORT-AU-PRINCE, HAITI -- A woman and her child prepare mudcakes in the courtyard of the abandoned former political prison of Fort Dimanche renamed in 1994 the Village of Democracy. The women hope to make 20-30 Haitian dollars from the two buckets of cakes they prepare and dry in the sun over three days. The slum area is home to thousands of Haitians living without electricity, water or other services who flocked to the area in 1994 seeking jobs and hope from the Aristide government.
"We do not need a lot of money but we don't have any money at all. If we could find opportunities to find a few dollars we would be fine."
